Hohenschwangau Castle, which means "High Swan County
Castle" in English, has a history dating back to the 12th century. It was
originally built as a fortress by the Knights of Schwangau and was later
expanded and renovated by various owners over the centuries. In the 19th
century, Hohenschwangau Castle was owned by Maximilian II of Bavaria, who was
King Ludwig II's father. The castle served as the royal summer residence for
the Bavarian royal family.

The castle is primarily built in the neo-Gothic and
neo-Romanesque architectural styles. It features picturesque towers, turrets,
and courtyards, making it an excellent example of Romantic-era architecture. King
Ludwig II spent much of his childhood at Hohenschwangau Castle. His upbringing
in this castle had a significant influence on his later architectural and
artistic interests, which would lead him to commission Neuschwanstein Castle.

Due to its secluded and strategically unimportant location,
the palace survived the destruction of the two World Wars. Until 1944, it
served as a depot for Nazi plunder that was taken from France by the
Reichsleiter Rosenberg Institute for the Occupied Territories (Einsatzstab
Reichsleiter Rosenberg für die besetzten Gebiete), a suborganisation of the
Nazi Party. In April 1945, the SS considered blowing up the palace to prevent
the building and the artwork it contained from falling to the enemy. The plan
was not realised by the SS-Gruppenführer who had been assigned the task, and at
the end of the war the palace was surrendered undamaged to representatives of
the Allied forces. The Allied occupation authorities eventually returned the
palace to the reconstituted Bavarian state government.

Füssen beckoned and off we headed to visit yet another pretty town of Bavaria!
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; fountains in other towns, it was associated with charity. In times of famine or

designed by the architect Georg von Hauberrisser. The New Town Hall is located
in the Marienplatz, which is the central square in Munich's historic city
center. The New Town Hall continues to serve as the seat of the city's
administration and government. It houses various municipal offices and
departments, making it a working government building as well as a historic and
cultural attraction. One of the most distinctive features of the New Town Hall
is its Glockenspiel, a famous clock tower and carillon. The Glockenspiel
consists of 43 bells and 32 life-sized figurines that reenact historical events
and stories from Munich's past. The performance occurs daily at 11:00 AM and
12:00 PM (as well as an additional show at 5:00 PM in summer). We missed taking

of years.

In 2021 when we were visiting our son and his family (great
travellers in their own right too) in Berlin, we decided to do a road trip of
South Germany and we did it. A road trip of approximately 2900 kms over a
period of 22 nights. Almost all of our stays were in Air BnBs except the
initial couple of nights which we spent in a wonderful Novotel Hotel. The
reason being we were travelling with an infant all of six months, hence Air
BnBs would be more to our convenience and turned out to be the right decision.

My first challenge was of driving on the wrong side of the
road or rather the right side. See how confusing it is? The second was driving
an automatic car. Both firsts for me. Happy to say I managed both drastic
changes quite efficiently, thanks to timely prompts by my son and the
wonderfully disciplined German traffic.

Our first leg of the fantastic journey, Berlin to Nuremberg,
a distance of 450kms was covered in just over five hours despite taking all
necessary breaks on the way.

This is what we saw in the couple of days we were in

A wonderful thriller, well woven tale that keeps you on edge right through.
It is about the pit falls of addiction be it alcohol or crossword, that the two main characters in the book are addicted to.
She is an alcoholic and one who loves to live it up and he is a cruciverbalist (crossword setter/one who enjoys solving crosswords). He is also a control freak and wishes to keep her under his control all the time. She describes his mind as Inside his skull I imagine criss-cross wiring that links up nerve endings, as lexicographical data gets analysed and stored on a hard drive. He studies words the way an entomologist studies insects, dissecting phrases into the smallest possible components and always on the lookout for a rare species of word formation
In the end it is a murder mystery so saying anything more will be a spoiler.
Suffice to say it is a well written book for the murder mystery lover and specially for a crossword lover as there are plenty of pointers on how to solve cryptic clues.
Go for it. You won't regret it.

Humour and adventure are apparently great mates and this book did not fail in either.
Simon Loughlin narrates his amazing adventure of cycling from Ireland to India and Nepal with a sense of humour which ensures that the reader is not bored reading about the travails of the lone cyclist.
He gets philosophical too, a result possibly of being alone. An excerpt -
What is this fear of nothingness? Here it is extreme. I ponder holy . men who intentionally go long periods into deserts to commune with God, where all there is to observe is the mind and its own creations. Here my imagination grows unhindered, into what appears like living things, alive until my mind releases them.
A seed of energy takes root, and suddenly I am where I am and there are no questions or commentaries, there is a sudden explosive blooming of infinite possibility, a nameless energy that adores the nature of everything. Whatever is born in this shining void of mind, be it a memory, a hope, a projection - my mind runs with it, runs with every possibility of it, my blood fills with wild excitement.
Overall an extremely readable book that might even persuade the armchair traveller to get up and get going!
Very interesting book, full of adventure and as the title suggests Grit, Gravel and Gear, all three are dealt with in detail.
What comes through in this ride of his is not only details about the countries he visits but also the warmth with which he is welcomed almost everywhere. When you read this you wonder where the hate, racism, casteism is.
Travel sure opens up one's mind as it helps in understanding how the world survives and that there are so many more beautiful concepts and cultures than one's own.
Here are some interesting excerpts from the book to give you an idea of what the book is all about,
Our lives are filled with so many useless things. Material pleasures bring no sustained pleasure.
It is true, that the best things in life are for free. And a bicycle makes it happen each day.
If travel and/or adventure is your passion you must read it. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

A laid back conversational write up about Kedarnath's travel from India to Greece and back via Iran on his Royal Enfield 350cc Thunderbird.
Reading it makes you feel as if he is narrating his tales around a bonfire over a couple of drinks.
It is a honest, no holds barred write up about his interaction with all the people he meets on his journey.
Since he has couchsurfed his way, it has helped him discover how cultures shape attitudes of people. Staying with locals and living a few days the way they do, goes a long way in educating oneself.
He does not write about monuments and museums that he visits since there is plenty of information about it on the world wide internet.
Here are a couple of his insights -
..riding long distance stirs up one's thoughts in unique directions.
The power of giving and selflessness brings only good things to those who practice it; and when it is reciprocated with the same attitude, creates beauty for all.

A must read book for all travelers, specially for those on shoe string budgets.

A wonderful humourous travelogue from the inimitable tongue in cheek writing of George Mahood.
A great memorable road trip across America in a jalopy. It starts with George and his friend, who incidentally has to return halfway back to England due to visa issues, replaced by George's girlfriend Rachel who joins him in this amazing adventure of a lifetime.
In this travelogue George gives an insight into the culture and lifestyle of Americans in the cities as well as in the rural areas.
A must read for all roadies and all travel enthusisasts. Will keep you entertained from the beginning to the end.

An amazing read. It's full of adventure, culture, excitement, romance, mystery and of course a woman riding a motorcycle.
She has detailed how the various cultures viewed a woman riding a big motorcycle in the early 80s though am sure that there are certain subtle changes over the decades now.
She is a young woman, just after college, setting out on a round the world trip on a motorcycle in 1982 when it was not the done thing. Despite all odds she goes ahead and proves that once you put your passion to work there is no looking back.
She started her ride from London, USA, Australia, South East, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Turkey and back to London.
Her description of riding on various roads/offroads is an education for all motorcyclists.
A must read for every motorcyclist and travellers.

A wonderful book that gives the reader an insight into the lives of educated Indians in pre independence India.
Though it could have slipped into being a window into someone's privacy, it manages to be objective by clever editing.
It is a fascinating read and shows how courageous the Indian woman was even in the pre independence India and how forward thinking was the educated elite who believed in equal rights for women and their right to education without being tied down to raising a family.
A must read as a tiny glimpse of Indian history.

It is available only on Kindle at the moment. Will soon be available as a paperback edition.

A treasure chest of 'almost lost recipes' of comfort food for Indians. Very well documented.
Possibly to make it attractive to a larger audience than just the foodies, she has interviewed the Indian celebrities and their take on comfort food. All of them undeniably talk about the food they ate that was made with a lot of love by their mothers, irrespective of their social status then.
My only grouse is there should have been pictures of the food rather than that of celebrities. It would have added value for readers/foodies like me. The pictures of the celebrities are available all over the internet while the pictures of the almost forgotten food would be a tough ask.
Else a great book of recipes!

Bought this book on Amazon

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is one book that can be judged by its cover.
On the cover you see the man and his machine under the title ‘Quest’.
As the title says this book is all about the quest that Aditya Raj Kapoor is on. His vehicle for the Quest is the Motorcycle which he has ridden around the world across seventeen countries clocking thirty-five thousand kilometres over a period of ten months.
He makes it clear at the outset that this is not a travelogue but it is about a journey of self-discovery. Motorcycling is the perfect vehicle for this ‘activity’ of introspection. As soon as one starts the ride one tends to zone out and meditation begins. It is multitasking at its best.
In this book Aditya, who hails from a premier family of the Hindi film industry, the Kapoors, son of Shammi Kapoor, traces his life right from the time he got thinking about his life as a young adult. He has been strongly influenced by his Guru who directed him on the path away from the film industry, that he has diligently followed.
Wherever he goes he meets up with his Guru’s disciples who ensure he has safe passage.
What stands out is the fact that a Round the World trip on a motorcycle is a very tough task, physically and mentally.
Aditya, despite his influential contacts in most parts of the world took a long time in getting his plans off the ground, so one can imagine how difficult it would be for a commoner. Hence, if you are planning a similar trip, remember it will be ten times tougher.
This book is more of an autobiography with snippets of his life woven together with circumstances that he finds himself on his motorcycle journey. Very interesting.
This is not a book that can be finished in one sitting. It is a book that has to be relished and digested chapter by chapter which again are thought sized pieces.
Do read it to get an insight into the life of a thinker who loves to balance his life on two wheels round the world.
Does he get the answers he is looking for?
I will not be a spoilsport. Read the book to find out.

It's a fun, interesting and a quick read about all those exotic places you might have visited or will surely want to visit after reading this book by Ami Bhat who is a passionate traveler, photographer and an amazing narrator.
I finished reading this book in one sitting as most of you will.
Her writing is fluid and engaging and she knows exactly how much time and talk is to be devoted to each story without letting you keep the book down.
It reminded me of the tour guides at all tourist places who hold your interest with stories that you might have heard but they have the knack of spicing them up with their own creativity.
The basic premise that Ami Bhat has based her stories on is that every popular place has some myth, legend or very interesting history associated with it. In this book she narrates the best myth by giving it her own spin followed by a short fact sheet of the place and links for additional reading if you wish.
She takes the reader on ten different trips to ten fascinating destinations, both National and International.
My personal favourites are (in no particular order) -

1. Where did she go - in Kuldhara, Rajasthan, India (famous as the abandoned village)

2. Sparkling Secrets - Gold Coast, Australia (fun treasure hunt)

3. The Last village - Ladakh, India (Aryan descendants)

The other seven too are fascinating and fun reads but the above three appealed to me due to personal reasons.

A must read for all travelers or even wannabe travelers!

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Finally am here to share my experience of reading this massive tome by Leo Tolstoy.
If it was not for the lockdown due Covid19, I wonder if I would have been able to go through the lives of the Russians during the war waged by Napoléon.
This was my personal War against the boredom during lockdown to attain some Literary Peace of having read one of the most read and quoted books.
It took me over a year to complete reading this book and I did manage to read a few other short novels in between just to lighten up the mood.
This book delves into the personal lives of the Russian Nobility and their subjects, their relationships, how they are affected by the War waged by Napoleon against Russia and an in-depth analysis of how historians view the war where even Losers are Winners.
Leo Tolstoy also goes to great lengths to talk about the continuity that exists in the lives of people and nations. In the Epilogue he discusses the existence or the lack of Absolute Freedom.
Overall a book to be read to understand the concept of freedom, war and peace.
I had downloaded the ebook published in April 2011, by Project Gutenberg, translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude.

I leave you with a few excerpts from the book which I liked and found them relevant in today's circumstances.

If no one fought except on his own conviction, there would be no wars.

Seize the moments of happiness, love and be loved! That is the only reality in the world, all else is folly.

...the endless variety of men's minds, which prevents a truth from ever presenting itself identically to two persons.

Not only does a good army commander not need any special qualities, on the contrary he needs the absence of the highest and best human attributes - love, poetry, tenderness, and philosophic inquiring doubt. He should be limited, firmly convinced that what he is doing is very important (otherwise he will not have sufficient patience), and only then will he be a brave leader.

Who excuses himself accuses himself.

If there was none of this magnanimity in war, we should go to war only when it was worth while going to certain death..

...to say that the will of many men is expressed by the actions of any one historic personage, is in itself false.

Since the world began and men have killed one another no one has ever committed such a crime against his fellow man without comforting himself with this same idea. This idea is le bien public, the hypothetical welfare of other people.

Where there's law there's injustice.

For the 'great' man nothing is wrong, there is no atrocity for which a 'great' man can be blamed.

And it occurs to no one that to admit a greatness not commensurable with the standard of right and wrong is merely to admit one's own nothingness and immeasurable meanness.

..pure and complete sorrow is as impossible as pure and complete joy.

If we admit that human life can be ruled by reason, the possibility of life is destroyed.

We know that man has the faculty of becoming completely absorbed in a subject however trivial it may be, and that there is no subject so trivial that it will not grow to infinite proportions if one's entire attention is devoted to it.

My whole idea is that if vicious people are united and constitute a power, then honest folk must do the same.

Power is the collective will of the people transferred, by expressed or tacit consent, to their chosen rulers.

If there be a single law governing the actions of men, free will cannot exist, for then man's will is subject to that law.

Kareem is an American of Egyptian origin hence he does have an inkling of the Arab culture so his trip to Iran is not a huge culture shock for him.
I enjoyed reading the first half of the book and then the interest slackened.
Kareem does give some wonderful insights into the political and cultural circumstances of Iran hence it is a recommended read to get a glimpse of life in Iran during its turbulent times.
The author's thoughts keep jumping between life in the USA and Iran to find analogies for the stark differences and this is disturbing at times.

I will give below a few excerpts from the book to give you an idea of what to expect.

When you have a problem with someone, you should talk, Sanjar often said. Not doing so, or setting prohibitive conditions to doing so, could only mean that both sides desired the impasse...The result was that the citizens of each country had little chance to speak with one another and bypass the trolls guarding either side of the divide with their aging arsenals of propoganda.

Self-importance: that is the scent in the air of New York.

An hour with a man of learning is better than a thousand years studying on your own.

It was a place where you had to rely on people - not a system - if you wanted justice.

I don't undesrstand how someone can say they just love God or Jesus when they don't even know how to love another person!

I began to understand the larger goal of censorship: getting people's own minds to do the work of the police.

Perfection is a return to a preconceived notion.

It was the conditioning I had as a middle class American: you could go out anywhere and get served hand and foot, but to have someone serving you in your own home was both economically and culturally questionable.

What I learned was that they desired to do ordinary things without being subjected to extraordinary attention.

Freedom is an opening with sharp edges that disfigures some and refines others.

Overall a book worth reading.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I opted to read this as I love all the genres that Fitzsimmons claims to indulge in simultaneously. After reading the book I realized that he does indulge but I found it difficult to manage Wodehouse type humour with armchair mystery solving.
The concentration on the language is so much that almost till I had finished the book I had forgotten that I am reading a mystery book.
My humble opinion is that the author finds it difficult to be flippant and mysterious simultaneously.

I quote below a couple of excerpts to give you an idea of his writing prowess.

Vickers turned from the dresser and looked at me as though I'd come through the door in a suit of armour, carrying my head under my arm.

You show one of the London property developers a tree, they go into a blind rage, they do, and before you know it, they'll have it down and replaced with a terraced townhouse.

The interior of the tavern was of the cool, quiet, eternal twilight found in all the best pubs regardless of the hour or season. The only source of light was slices of sunshine that sneaked through the cracks to find and illuminate lazy particles of dust.

A book that is a conflict between easy reading and wanting to finish to get to the bottom of the mystery. For me, the former won and I read it at leisure.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A book that I would carry to a dentist appointment or to read at the bus stop or in the security hold area while waiting for a flight. It has the abiiity to distract your from the rigours of waiting and keep you chuckling at how the world behaves.
It is a collection of thoughts that you might have surely thought but not penned hence it is more of an affirmation of the strange plastic world we live in and she has managed to put these thoughts forward with a great sense of humour.
It is a great book to be read in short doses as it doesn't have a plot nor is there any storyline but just a collection of snarky thoughts.

Here are a few gems to whet your curiosity and arouse your desire for more -

It's not good to be popu;ar at work because you will get assigned to the hard jobs first.

I have been cleaning my apartment all afternoon and will now enjoy the five minutes it stays that way.

I want to know why the most expensive furniture is also the ugliest.

All water has been pissed out of some creature at some point in time

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Fun in parts but drags you through the 1st half of the book. The last 25% of the book is comprehensively written with a lot of thought and clarity and is what made me give the 3rd star.

It is a two in one book. A tale about the relationship between a mother and her daughter and how they deal with life and fidelity. Adding to the atmosphere are their husbands and children and how they cope with their parents and grandparents.

The character of the Witch could have been better fleshed out. Though the Witch is the central character of the book, I found the character of the daughter more interesting.

I found it to be gossipy in nature and a collection of short stories picked out from scrapbooks.

The most intereting line from the book for me was -

Now you look like a proper witch. Let those wrinkles breathe! Be proud of those age spots. Don't hide them under a veneer of camouflage squeezed from the glands of tortured animals!

Disclaimer : I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
magiceyehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848851692951192508noreply@blogger.com0
